The LAB (for installation + performance art) will be hosting “Live Transmissions” a series of live collaborative time based performances by our current LAB artist, Morgan O’Hara, and a selection of unique musicians and artists. They will take place in the Gallery, which is also the location of O’Hara’s latest site specific wall drawing. Each performer will play in the space while O’Hara simultaneously draws a “Live Transmission”, which will result in an abstracted map of the their gestures.

Each performance will be fully audible and visible from the street outside the gallery on 47th and Lexington.

For more information please contact Danika Druttman 212.339.2092 or email rogersmitharts@rogersmith.com

Schedule

MORGAN O’HARA and Friends at the LAB April 2nd-May 7th 2010

Morgan O’Hara’s Live Transmission drawings track, in real time, the vital movement of living beings, transcending both figuration and abstraction, executing a direct neural translation from one human action into another. Drawing methodically with multiple razor-sharp pencils and both hands, as time-based performance, O’Hara condenses movement into accumulations of graphite line which combine the controlled refinement of classical drawing with the unbound sensuality of spontaneous gesture. In the context of her recently completed site-specific wall drawing, O’Hara will do a LIVE TRANSMISSION DRAWING PERFORMANCE duet, drawing with each of the following. The site-specific wall drawing, Backstage Transmission, will be in place until 7 May 2010.

For ten years, Norton was Anthony Braxton’s main percussionist in both the “ghost trance” phase and the “standards” phase, plotting out the course for all percussionists who followed him. His most recent projects include compositions for various sized chamber groups and a duo with pianist Connie Crothers. Norton was a resident composer at the prestigious MacDowell Colony and has served on the faculty of several schools including the University of Maryland. He is currently on the faculty of William Paterson University.

DAVID WATSON 26 April 2 – 3 PM

His performances draw on traditional sources, electronics, and experimental improvisation to “blow the bagpipes into the 21st century”. In 1987 he moved to New York and has performed in clubs, new music and concert venues throughout New York (cbgb’s, The Knitting Factory, The Cooler), Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. He has curated music series for Roulette, Experimental Intermedia Foundation, St. Mark’s Church, Greenwich House, Bang-on-a-Can, PS 1, and PS 122, toured Japan with John Zorn and members of The Boredoms, Merzbow, Ground Zero, Makigami Koichi among others.

For Kim, O’Hara’s site-specific wall drawing evokes a strong sense of Buddhism, seeing it as a metaphor for “Tangled human relationships among living beings and the universe which are both absolute and simultaneously fall into nothingness.” Using white paint, rice paper and black thread he will prepare himself physically and then execute the practice of 108 deep bows in the space.

JOAN GRUBIN 29 April 3 -4 PM

Joan Grubin is a Brooklyn-based visual artist who makes dimensional installations in paper. Her work is rooted in the vocabulary of minimalist geometric painting and deals with issues of perception and color. Her intention is to engage the viewer through an optically disorienting ambiguity of space that gives rise to a tension between what is materially present and what is not. In the Lab, she will be creating elements with fluorescent paint and tape for a new wall installation of whimsical sculptural gestures made out of the detritus from her primary body of work. She has shown widely in solo and group exhibitions in and around the New York area and beyond, including the Islip Museum and the Weatherspoon Museum. In 2008 she was awarded a Fellowship in Painting from the New York Foundation for the Arts. She has twice been a finalist for a Percent for Art public art commission.

Fans will have two chances to purchase tickets before they officially go on sale this Friday, October 23rd. American Express card members will have an exclusive pre-sale this Wednesday, October 21st beginning at 10am. The next day, members of the Matisyahu fan club, and followers of his on Twitter, will be able to buy tickets starting at 10am using a special code obtained by monitoring Matisyahu’s Twitter feed.

‘One Day (Acoustic)’

Matisyahu is currently on the road behind Light which Billboard said “pushes musical boundaries…dipping into everything from guitar driven rockers to stripped down acoustic tunes.” The 40 date tour is sponsored by surf-wear brand Mavericks. Coined as “the wave beyond,” Mavericks inspires hardcore athletes to face the unpredictably raw power of Mother Nature. Matisyahu and Mavericks is a match largely in part to a shared passion for preserving the environment. The tour pulls into Anaheim at the House of Blues on Wednesday at 7pm.

This week I set out to review the different options available for LIVE internet broadcasting. There are a number of options and platforms available. The best advice is to determine YOUR needs and pick the one that suits you best.

Here is my best of list

USTREAM.tv

livestream.com

justin.tv

Qik.com

Kyte.tv

Some of these platforms don’t offer services that others do…for example Qik is meant only for mobile phones. while USTREAM allows streaming from a PC or mobile (iphone).

USTREAM

Right now USTREAM is my favorite. It’s really popular and offers some high profile content as well as a ton of user generated LIVE and archived content.

Pros

You can use flash media live encoder (if you have a fast PC) for HQ broadcasts.

Easy. Like really f%#ing easy.

New broadcaster app for iphone allows for spontaneous LIVE streaming (don’t forget to jailbrake and install ‘mobile substrate’ so you can stream over 3g).

Cons

Limited quality with mac (no plugin).

Messy UI sort of reminds me of myspace (not a good thing).

Player app for iphone doesn’t work (that sucks).

The ‘youtube’ of LIVE internet broadcast (at least for now).

Livestream.com

Pros

Gorgeous design. Site is beautiful, and easy to navigate.

Standalone app for mac (can broadcast using h.264).

Cons

Annoying (video) ads.

Unreliable recording (archiving) with mac app (to be fair: the mac app is still in beta)

Justin.TV

Pros

Says it’s compatible with Quicktime Broadcaster (HQ broadcasting for mac)

Very experimental (lots of lifecasting going on here).

Nice design.

Cons

I only got QT Broadcaster working for a minute…(crap).

Have you ever heard of justin.tv? (now you have).

Qik

Pros

Qik is pretty awesome.

Live video from your iphone (jailbroken), and certain Nokia handsets.

Syndicates really well. Press the red button and it posts to facebook (live and archived video) posts to youtube, twitter, tumblr, etc.

Cons

Only works on mobile phones.

Kyte

Pros

OK site design.

Offers mobile and PC broadcasting.

Quality seems good.

Cons

Have you ever heard of kyte?

Site seems heavily geared to their pay model and a little hard to navigate because of it.

Hard to navigate to FAQ and other HELP info.

Come back here every tuesday for more technology related reviews and best of lists.

It began during a downtown Manhattan loft party on New Years Eve of 2008. A somewhat intoxicated Grant Maxwell, lead singer of The Morning Pages, was approached by an equally intoxicated Russell Simins, drummer for The John Spencer Blues Explosion. He had heard The Morning Pages’ EP and was impressed with the band’s unique blend of Country, Soul and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Simins and the band got to talking and eventually agreed he would produce The Morning Pages’ debut album, Rising Rain.

Simins and The Morning Pages hunkered down in Brooklyn-based studio, Cowboy Technical Services (Ryan Adams, Steve Earle), and began work on the 11 tracks that make up Rising Rain. Surrounded by walls of vintage gear and faded Al Green and Waylon Jennings album covers, the band tore through material ranging from the raucous stomp of “With The Lord,” the epic beauty of “My Name Is Lion” and the classic country-flavored duet of the title track. The Morning Pages brought in a cast of NYC’s brightest up-and-comers to help out on the record, including sister-duo The Pierces who sing harmonies on over half of the record, Simins himself on percussion, Alec Higgins (Alberta Cross) on piano, and Gillian Rivers (Nicole Atkins) on fiddle.

With prominent influences such as The Band, Waylon, Willie, and Gram Parsons, The Morning Pages, who originally hail from Nashville, Austin, Tulsa, San Francisco, Ohio, and Massachussettes, bring a deep, rural passion to the New York City scene. Alongside contemporaries like The Felice Brothers and Blitzen Trapper, the band blends the speed and sophistication of the city with the organic depth of the country. Their debut EP, The Company You Keep, released in the summer of 2007, perked the ears of critics, with The Tripwire declaring: “The sound that these guys got onto tape comes from the mighty heavens. It’s like American Beauty slept with Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris while cheating on The Band’s version of ‘I Shall Be Released.’”

“Transcending the irony-drenched streets of its Brooklyn home, The Morning Pages write exceptionally organic and emotional music that pulls at the heart strings without inducing nausea. ” -American Songwriter

“Rootsy combo the Morning Pages is based in Brooklyn but delivers a pleasingly vintage, warm, country-rock sound that’s far more suggestive of Nashville. ” -Time Out New York

“NYC artists on the rise . . . The guys have all kinds of chops and are yet another example of this burgeoning roots rock taking over the Big Apple.” -The Deli

“The Morning Pages humbly and soulfully pick up where their predecessors left off. Combining honky tonk, roots rock, and folk, these five New Yorkers rock, roll, and wail more like scruffy Southern gentlemen than jaded Billyburg rawkers.” -Flavorpill

“The sound that these guys got onto tape comes from the mighty heavens. It’s like American Beauty slept with Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris while cheating on The Band’s version of “I Shall Be Released.” -The Tripwire
