Having Fun And Trying Lily’s New Fall Lunch Menu

When you mix a crisp day in NYC, a new Fall lunch menu and two people that love take pictures of everything – the end result is this:

Adam and Brian’s “Big Words” Lunch Review at Lily’s Restaurant.

Recently our Chef, Daniel Mowles, released his teams Fall lunch menu and we were excited to try it. We each started with the ‘soup of the day’ which happened to be Clam Chowder (pronounced Chowdah). Not to creamy, nicely seasoned, small potatoes, clams in every bite and fresh, warm rustic bread to clean the bowl! As a main course Adam enjoyed the Papperdelle Pasta, served with broccoli rabe, hen of the woods mushrooms, roasted shaved garlic and fresh pecorino romano cheese.  I opted for the Market Salad which boasted house-made pickled root vegetables, roasted cauliflower, forest mushrooms, sliced breakfast radish and a vegetable puree dressing.

For dessert Jesus, our server and all around great guy, suggested the Five Spice Apple Tart. The smell alone of the spices, especially the cinnamon, were enough to prompt us to order a second!

To wash it all down an espresso and a cappuccino…

A new season means an exciting new line-up of beer, food and wine here at lilys restaurant in the Roger Smith hotel. We have added some great, energetic team members to both the restaurant/bar and the kitchen. Please stop by and introduce yourself to restaurant managers Dawn, Kevin and Jeff (Jeff will most likely be in chef whites as the new kitchen manager). We will soon be launching a lilys website and will include full profiles and information there. Until then nothing beats the real thing so we look forward to seeing you soon for Happy Hour!

Ulrika Bengtsson is the food and beverage director of the Roger Smith Hotel.  Originally from Sweden, Ulrika has now lived in New York for 20 years.  In this profile piece she explains her upbringing in Sweden and all of the great local foods that she grew up with, including a regular diet of moose!

Cupcakes4Charity Kicks Off With Mouth Watering Cupcake Extravaganza, Oct 1

Group utilizes the power of social media (and dessert) to make a difference in the community

September 24, 2009 (NEW YORK, NY) Just as a special dessert can help lift ones spirits on a bad day, it can also help raise money for a well deserving charity. On October 1, 2009, Cupcakes4Charity will debut its very first sweet tooth event at the Roger Smith Hotel in New York City from 7-10 pm. Including an array of extraordinary raffle prizes, a networking happy hour, and a wide assortment of delicious cupcakes for sale, the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society in its mission to raise awareness of the disease, diminish suffering and save lives.

Cupcakes4Charity aims to utilize social media outlets and engage every individuals affection for all things sweet to campaign for various causes via mouth watering social events. The three Cupcakes4Charity founders Anna OBrien, Joey Pasion and Sara Wingert first met by conversing on the social media network, Twitter, and have decided to band together to give back to the community using the draw of New York Citys trendy dessert (the cupcake) and the influence of their comprehensive 7,000+ Twitter followers and 1,500+ Facebook friends.

Cupcakes will be sold for $2 each and one hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated towards the efforts of one of the Cupcakes4Charitys founders, Sara Wingert, to raise more than $4,500 for the American Cancer Society. By training for and completing endurance races with the charity, including the Brooklyn Half Marathon and the New York City Half Marathon, the ING New York City Marathon will be the third endurance race that she has completed this year.

Attendees wearing yellow to the October 1 kickoff event will receive a discount on purchased cupcakes. All cupcakes and raffle prizes will be donated for the event.

Recently, there has been a  renewed interest in hot dogs, seen in the top food magazines, many newspapers and a whole mass of websites and blogs.
Dressed in fancy clothes, and now found in “upscale” eateries, people are enjoying the formerly humble hot dog as never before. Now is your chance to have a sampling of the traditional and the new style in one venue with an expert guide.

Join your guide, who is also one of America’s leading hot dog historians and gormandisers, Bruce Kriag, as he takes you on an exciting journey through the world of hot dogs and sausages, hailing from Chicago, New York, Italy, Coney Island and The Hudson Valley.

Bruce has written and lectured on hot dogs across the United States and around the world. His latest work on the subject is, Hot Dog: A Global History (Reaktion Press/University  of Chicago Press).

Swedish Whisky in New York, Tasting at the Roger Smith

At the 23 of September we will host an evening of Swedish Whisky at The Roger Smith Hotel (501 Lexington Ave). We are happy to invite you to sample and discuss the presence of Mackmyra Swedish Whisky in New York. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to mail or call.

Much of the whisky has been stored in 100-litre casks, which produces an exciting, powerful ageing process. We have also used newly manufactured Swedish oak casks, made using oak that was planted on the island of Visingsö 160 years ago and intended for use in building warships for the Swedish navy. The base is our Elegant recipe, stored in bourbon casks of first fill quality. All stored in the Bodås mine, 50 metres down inside the primary rock.

On Thursday September 3rd the Roger Smith Hotel hosted a rooftop clambake party on the 16th floor terrace.

The clambake consisted of 50 pounds of fresh lobster, picked out by Chef Daniel Mowles.  The event had a great group to enjoy the seafood feast.
