ArtWeLove, the online art gallery that makes fine art finally collectible, and Roger Smith Arts, the multi-disciplinary arts-production company, are thrilled to present Lobby Series #18: iheart variation 003 by New York-based artist Seth Indigo Carnes at The Roger Smith Hotel.

Following the overwhelming online success of Seth Carnes’s iheart variation 003, this exhibition marks the first presentation of ArtWeLove’s print series in a public venue. This show will also introduce a set of collaborative variations between Carnes and fellow artists such as Molly Dilworth and Douglas Rushkoff.

Carnes describes the iheart projectas “an exploration of symbolic language; a love affair with representation.” It consists of five prints: iheart, heart, splat, pill, and camera.

In a nod to Milton Glaser’s famous I♥ NY logo, Carnes has turned this common phrase on itself by substituting the now-traditional pictogram for their actual English-language equivalents. The four other prints are pictographic.

These five prints can be arranged, displayed, and sequenced in numerous ways, conveying different ideas, feelings, and themes, making owners of these prints artists in their own right.

To demonstrate this concept, the public is being invited to visit The Roger Smith Hotel lobby corridor, which will be lined with a grid of 15 framed prints. There, individuals will be welcomed to re-mix, re-arrange, and re-sequence the pieces to their hearts’ content every Tuesday, as well as the second and fourth Sundays of each month at 6pm, for the duration of this exhibition.

For those who can’t make it, time-lapse photography, documenting this evolutionary and transformational public-art phenomenon, will be available as a work in progress throughout the time of the exhibition at the following websites:

The LAB (for installation + performance art) is pleased to announce their October show, All Intellectual Animals are Dangerous is a multi-media installation offering the viewer a more intimate experience than usually found with public art projects. The windows of the gallery will be whited-out except for several small apertures, which will reveal various room interiors constructed out of paper and graphite, depicting an array of characters and events. Like Hitchcock`s Rear Window, each opening will give the audience a glimpse into different lives, however in All Intellectual Animals are Dangerous some rooms are inhabited by animals, some by people and one by an enormous spider. They are all presided over by a giant “Alice in Wonderland” –like character. Several of the interiors are small and present intimate, three–dimensional static tableau, and in a scale jump, two of them open onto larger spaces with narrative video projections, which are made by filming paper and graphite models. Passers-by may experience the piece as a cross between the viewing holes cut in a construction wall and the window displays on Fifth Avenue at Christmas time. On the busy streets of mid-town, this piece provides a voyeuristic experience of a fantastic realm populated by unusual and anthropomorphic creatures, all governed by a dream logic.

Yeon Jin Kim was born in Seoul, Korea, receiving her BFA from Seoul National University and MFA from Hunter College. She has shown work at the Islip Art Museum (Long Island), the Anne Street Gallery (Newburgh NY), the Storefront Artists Project (Pittsfield, MA), the Catskill Art Society, and Times Square Gallery (New York City). Kim’s videos have been screened in Seoul, Egypt, Germany and New York City. She has recently completed residencies at Yaddo (Saratoga Springs NY), the Saltonstall Foundation (Ithaca NY), BRIC/BCAT (Brooklyn) and the Islip Art Museum. Kim is a recipient of awards from both the Tony Smith Fund and the Ahl Foundation, and is currently an artist in residence at Henry Street Settlement. She teaches at the Ashcan Studio in Manhattan.

Joel Carreiro is based in New York City and directs the MFA Program at Hunter College. He has shown nationally and internationally and currently has a solo exhibition at Fairfield University in Connecticut, which will travel next year to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and then to Muehlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He is also currently showing work in Seoul, Korea. As an independent curator he has organized exhibitions for the Rotunda Gallery in Brooklyn, the Rockland Center for the Arts and the Hopper House Art Center in Nyack, New York, and the Leubsdorf Gallery at Hunter College, as well as the Intar Gallery in New York City. He is currently co-curating, with Brett De Palma, an exhibition for the Catskill Art Society in Livingston Manor,  New York called “Utopia and Wallpaper.

A passionate and expressive style coupled with a formidable technique has garnered attention for Simon Powis as a talented soloist, chamber musician and innovator. Growing up in Sydney, Australia, Powis began his studies at the age of five on the cornet. Inspired by his brother’s musical pursuits he took up the guitar at age eleven and began an enduring obsession that would result in performances throughout Europe, Australia and the Americas.

October 10th 2010, 4pm: Irene Gómez

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Irene Gómez graduated with the gold medal in guitar and chamber music at the Conservatory Claude Debussy in Saint Germain en Laye, France, with maestro Javier Quevedo. She was the first guitarist to graduate from the National University in Bogotá with maestro Ramiro Isaza. Gómez has released four albums with contrasting repertoires that have been highly acclaimed. Irene has toured extensively in France, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Germany, The United States, and Colombia. She has both taught and coordinated the Guitar Program at the National University in Bogotá, and in the fall of 2010 will be relocating to New York to study at The Juilliard School with Sharon Isbin.

November 14th 2010, 4pm: Michael Nicolella

With a repertoire spanning from J.S. Bach to Jimi Hendrix, Michael Nicolella is recognized as one of America’s most innovative classical guitar virtuosos. He has received wide critical acclaim for his performances, recordings and compositions. As a concert artist, Michael has performed throughout North America and Europe as solo recitalist, chamber musician and soloist with orchestra. Nicolella’s most recent album, Shard, was described in Frets magazine as “an exciting textbook on how to honor classical tradition and kick it in the ass at the same time”.

January 9th 2011, 4pm: The Back Bay Guitar Trio

“The Back Bay Guitar Trio can conjure a sweet choir of angels or rip into the strings with the percussive fervor of a jazz drummer.” The Boston Globe

The Trio formed in 2002 and has performed throughout New England from Dartmouth College and Longy School of Music to Berklee College and The House of Blues.  . The BBGT have also been featured artists at the world renowned Boston Hatch Shell, the Boston Classical Guitar Society concert series, and have opened for guitarist Al Dimeola at the Lebanon (NH) Opera House.

February 13th 2011, 4pm: Tracy Anne Smith

Called “a great musician…full of feeling and colors,” by composer Jacques Hétu, Tracy Anne Smith is garnering increasing praise for her expressive performances, rich tonal palette and musical control. Cuban guitarist/composer Leo Brouwer praised her “polyphonic hands” and “tremendous sound” while American virtuoso Benjamin Verdery commended her “ability to express the emotion of a work to its core.” Even 80’s icon Sinbad offered, “I don’t know what she’s doing — but I know it’s deep.”

March 13th 2011, 4pm: Isaac Bustos

Classical Guitarist Isaac Bustos enjoys an extensive performing career that has taken him to Canada, Central America, Europe and all over The United States.  Bustos has gained critical acclaim and is recognized as one of the top guitarists of his generation.  He has made radio and television appearances and has been invited to perform in some of the most prestigious festivals: Guitar Foundation of America Annual Convention, Portland Guitar Festival, Southwest Guitar Festival, Brownsville Guitar Festival and the Classical Minds Festival.  Bustos has appeared as a soloist with the Orchestra of New Spain, The Baytown Symphony Orchestra, The Nicaraguan National Symphony Orchestra and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro JoAnn Falletta.

April 10th 2011, 4pm: Nicolas Ciraldo

Praised as “an exceptionally musical and accomplished guitarist,” Nicholas Ciraldo is a leader among his generation of American classical guitarists. He has won awards and reached high levels at several prestigious solo competitions, including the Tredrez-Locquemau International Guitar Competition (France), twice at the MTNA Guitar Competition (USA), the Gaetano Zinetti International Chamber Music Competition (Italy), the GFA Solo Guitar Competition (USA), and the Portland International Guitar Competition (USA). Ciraldo has enjoyed numerous solo, chamber, and concerto performances throughout the United States, South America, and Europe, from Boston’s Jordan Hall to Berlin’s Berliner Dom to Brazil’s Teatro José Maria Santos.

May 8th 2011, 4pm: Lynn McGrath

While studying Spanish as a foreign exchange student in Mexico, Lynn McGrath bought a guitar on a whim and asked a visiting professor (Alfredo Sanchez) for lessons, never imagining that years later she would be invited back as a professional musician. Since then, Lynn received her Master and Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree from USC and has studied with some of today’s most prominent guitarists including William Kanengiser and Pepe Romero.  She has performed in many international festivals including the XIX Festival Internacional de Guitarra (Lima, Peru), the Guitar on the Mediterranean Festival (Italy), the Nikšić Festival (Montenegro), the III Muestra de Guitarra Ajijic (Mexico) and the 2009 GFA Convention. In her unique rendition of Platero y yo by Castelnuovo-Tedesco, she has astounded audiences and received critical acclaim by performing the role of guitarist and narrator simultaneously. She serves as the Tour Director for the GFA and presently lives and teaches in Albuquerque, NM.

June 12th 2011, 4pm: John Lehmann-Haupt

John Lehmann-Haupt, a New York based guitarist, has been playing since he was five years old. Known equally for his arrangements of popular and traditional songs, as for his classical interpretations, he has performed throughout the Northeast and in the homes of such prominent New Yorkers as Tom Brokaw, Madeleine Albright, and Donald Trump. His twelve year engagement at Windows on the World (atop the World Trade Center) was cited for musical excellence by The New York Times.

July 10th 2011, 4pm: Scott Borg

Praised as a guitarist with “enormous facility on the guitar, a fluent technique, who plays with total confidence and professional expertise, panache and artful spontaneity”, by Grammy Award-winning guitarist Sharon Isbin, Australian classical guitarist Scott Borg performs extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, he has been a featured artist at major concert halls such as Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and New York’s Apollo Theatre with rock legend Carlos Alomar. As a winner of Artists International, he made his Carnegie Hall debut at Weill Recital Hall where New York Concert Review described his performance as “well balanced, gracefully presented, and expertly played”. Previous engagements have included performances and masterclasses at the Merida International Guitar Festival in Yucatan, Mexico, ICPNA International Guitar Festival in Lima Peru, Shell Darwin International Festival Australia, the 92nd Street Y, New York City Classical Guitar Society and Sydney Classical Guitar Society.

June 15th, 2010 The LAB (for installation + performance art) is pleased to announce ‘Soundstorm’, a kinetic installation by Daniel Rothbart and Maia Anthea Marinelli. This work intends to create a dialogue between art and nature, using sculptural elements that move according to the barometric pressure in New York City, at any given time. Isobars are represented by a shifting motorized web of pulleys and ropes that envelope the gallery and produce metallic noise. These sounds will be piped outside the gallery to complete the tableau vivant.

Daniel Rothbart’s work looks at the relationship between nature, urban postmodern identity and metaphysics. Rothbart holds an M.F.A. from Columbia University and won a Fulbright grant to Naples, Italy in 1990. His work can be found in public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Recent projects include exhibitions at the Andrea Meislin Gallery, Exit Art and the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in Peekskill. His latest European exhibition took place at Galerie Depardieu in Nice in June 2010.

Maia Anthea Marinelli’s work explores themes of women in relation to their cultural environment through conceptual strategies with sculpture, land art, photography, performance and interactive installations.Marinelli holds a B.F.A. from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence Italy, and an M.F.A. from New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. Her work has been exhibited at the Biennale of Mediterranean Artists, the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Genoa, Italy.

The LAB (for installation + performance art) is pleased to announce ‘The Trader’s Ball’, an installation by French artist Fred Forest. With his trademark over the top irony, Forest rubs salt in the wounds of the free market banking industry , mocking their response to the financial crisis that has shaken the world. The installation will include corporate mannequins dancing the night away in The LAB and parallel scenes of jovial ignorance taking place via Second Life on large screens in the gallery. The action will take place to music by New York rapper Jamalski, who will orchestrate the movements of the dancers to a syncopated beat based on the real time fluctuation of the financial markets. Fred Forest is a French new media artist. He is the holder of a state doctorate in the humanities from the Sorbonne and has also taught on the faculty of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Art, Cergy-Pontoise and University of Nice Sophia Antipolis. Forest has taken part in the Biennale of Venice (1976) and the Documenta of Kassel (1977, 1987) and his work has won awards at the Bienal do São Paulo (1973) and the Festival of Electronic Arts of Locarno (1995). In 2004, Forest’s archives, including his video works, were added to the collection of the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel of France and a retrospective of his work was held at the Slought Foundation in Philadelphia in 2007. Beginning in 2008, Forest launched a new series of performances in the environment of Second Life.

Abianne  started her professional career at Plum TV as a “preditor” (producer/director/editor) and continued to practice all the tricks of the trade with Panman Productions in New York City.  Her recent endeavors also include working with the art news website RogerSmithLife.com, as well as projects with Voluntary Instinct Productions. V.I. is a non-profit media company, whose purpose is to enhance public awareness of under-represented social and environmental issues. When not making films, she enjoys swimming in the ocean, lost causes and painting.

Synopsis:
Teddy (played by Justin Hall), an 11 year old boy left alone in a hotel, decides to wander after his parents go out for the evening. In an empty penthouse he encounters The Counterpane Fairy (Lauren Frances) who takes him on a storybook adventure. He is put to the heroic task of saving an enchanted princess while freeing her from a spell that has been cast on her by a little gray spider (Aleks Degtyarev).
In the real world, the adults around him are constantly trying to box him into a conformed norm. His adventure reminds us that a child’s imagination is pure. The Counterpane Fairy is a modern day fairy tale that takes place at the Roger Smith Hotel.
The story of the Counterpane Fairy is an adaptation from the “The Counterpane Fairy” by Katherine Pyle.
About the Director
John Knowles is the CEO of Panman Productions, an interactive production company based out of New York City that focuses on live broadcasting, film, fashion, art and social media.  Panman Productions consists of a five member team that operates collectively with the understanding that ours is a company where “All of your dreams come true.”
After being introduced to Live production at Plum TV, John worked to adapt the Live production model to his endeavors online.  In the last several years, John has worked in collaboration with the Roger Smith Hotel on a number of projects.  He helped to create and build the Roger Smith Social Media program and was the executive producer of the 2009 Roger Smith Shorts Film Festival which generated six original short films.

About the Director
John Christopher Alexander Michael Birdsong was born March 19th, 1981 in Brooklyn and raised in Texas and the Hamptons. His first job was as a counter boy at a Chinese take-out restaurant. John is not Chinese. He studied photography before interning and working as a Producer/Director/Editor for Plum TV. John’s passions include looking for the end of the internet, smelling things, and staying up late. John works with Panman Productions in midtown and lives with his girlfriend Morgan-Jo Teller in Brooklyn with their cat Fanny and an unnamed school of goldfish.

About the Director - Written by Pipe Adams
Born into a family of fur traders working their way through the Aleutians and the Bering Strait in the late 16th century, Marlo Leelan Brown was not always destined to make films. His name, literally translated, means the universal, or invincible prince. Young Marlo’s conception was nary cause for celebration, and his gestation and eventual birth a mere insurance policy to guard against the stark, endless Siberian winter. Just another maw to feed and, with hope, hands that would eventually grow strong enough to tear and render the priceless flesh from countless seals to add to the meager family coffers.
Time however, was on Marlo’s side and so Marlo danced the earth, a being reflected in the eyes of G-D, but yet a dead man inside, until the mid 90s. It was at this time that Marlo fell in with a bunch of like minded gents. Not immortals per say, but timeless characters nonetheless. For posterity’s sake, we shall call them the Original Hooligans. It was with the hooligans that Marlo discovered his true passion. Slowly, the hidden embers inside his mind, cold with age, began to warm, to glow. A fire was ignited inside of him. No longer the dancing dead, little Marlo Leelan was born anew. And the vehicle that brought young old Marlo back from the dead: Making Films.
But as he discovered his new found passion, changes began to occur. Each time Brown would look through his viewfinder a wrinkle would appear, a gray hair would sprout. Marlo Leelan Brown the foreverman, was now becoming just man.
Over the past decade Marlo has aged. Less like a fine cheese and more like a rusting washing machine in a dewy Bedford-Stuyvesant project courtyard, Marlo has forsaken eternal life for mortality to join the ranks of the Original Hooligan brotherhood and make films.
