SPRING LAB: a wall drawing by Morgan O’Hara

SPRING LAB: a wall drawing by Morgan O’Hara

The LAB (for installation + performance art) is pleased to announce SPRING LAB, Morgan O’Hara’s latest large scale site-specific wall drawing, displayed April 2-23, 2010.  O’Hara’s site-specific wall drawings are distilled abstractions of her “Live Transmissions” series, a collection of drawings she has been developing for over 20 years from thousands of subjects on five continents.

Live Transmissions” are made by a process in which O’Hara, with a pencil in each hand, records the left and right hand movements of an observed subject performing a task. Drawing methodically with multiple razor-sharp pencils and both hands, as time-based performance, O’Hara condenses movement into accumulations of graphite line.Such tasks have included knitting a sweater, a farmer’s wife digging up asparagus, a musician performing on piano and street pavers setting paving stones. The result is an abstracted map of the subject’s gestures.

The installation at The LAB will first involve the projection of a selected “Live Transmission” drawing done in New York, onto the walls and floor of the space.  Then, the spaces between the lines will be painted, allowing the lines themselves to emerge from the white walls. Changes and distortions caused by parallax will be incorporated into the new drawing. The result will be a large-scale painted version of the original graphite drawing whose lines will be seen at different angles as passers-by move past the piece.

The installation will be

on view 24/7 at the corner of 47th St. and Lexington Avenue.

Julia, a dog named Waffle & The Ghost of Roger Smith

Last night in the Penthouse of The Roger Smith Hotel Matt Semler & Danika Druttman, of The Lab Gallery, along with Julia Kaganskiy (MoMA) hosted a gathering of arts and tech enthusiasts. The main purpose was the introduction of smART Camp, a weekend long event in March, that will bring together influential artists, social network professionals and a community of people looking at ways the two are utilized for the exposure, education and sales for the art world.

The hotel, as many of you know, has a mysterious energy that seems to bring out the storyteller in all of its visitors, last night was no exception.
If you are skeptical… don’t believe me, believe Julia, Michelle Adam and a dog named Waffle.

PURGATION OF NIKE a performance installation by ROBERT C. MORGAN

PURGATION OF NIKE a performance installation by ROBERT C. MORGAN

The Lab (for Installation and Performance Art) was pleased to present the performance installation by Robert C. Morgan titled “The Purgation of Nike (1974-1984/2009)”. The piece is based on a 1984 professional studio recording of Morgan’s voice slowed down while reading excerpts from an old swim manual published in the late 1930s. The sound resembles a Tantric Buddhist chant and is the source that inspired the work.

The space of the gallery was painted black, with a red glow in one corner and a large sand circle in the center. There was a steaming pot of water to one side, placed on an electric coil, lit with a halogen light. A rotating sequence of 20 digital images of the artists hands (photographed in 1974) were looped on two small monitors in the corner, and a large painting (1984) of a colossal leg rested against the adjacent wall, also lit by halogen.

The 30-minute performance took place Tuesday October 20, 2009 and involved the sound of the tape as Morgan marked the sand through a series of circular movements that constitute ideographic signs.

Tommonlino at the Roger Smith Hotel

Tommonlino at the Roger Smith Hotel

On Thursday August 20, 2009 Damon Tommolino opened his art exhibit that embodies the concentration of time and space of sequential motion.

Artist Statement:
The common link between the thoughts behind my work is that I am extremely interested in the ongoing argument between Creationism vs. Darwinism vs. Intelligent Design vs. The Ancient Mystery vs. Who we really are today.

The point of my paintings is to provoke as much thought as possible. I try hard not to overly point a viewer in any one specific direction. I don’t believe this is my job as an artist. I would much rather present several ideas or options or paths for any viewer to take throughout any given piece. Therefore, I purposely leave a certain amount of ambiguity in the work. At its best, viewers will be able to make connections between the characters I paint and their own lives.

I strive to bring awareness to the way in which we live. My paintings reflect our society, our nation, and our most intimate relationships. Is there room for improvement or growth in our lives?

Love the Art. Molly Barnes and Damon talk about artist etiquette , and the nature of collectors in an art market.

4222 Studio Visits: Tommolino

4222 Studio Visits: Tommolino

Tommolino said that he would let me do the studio visit under two circumstances: one, that we drink a bottle of fine brandy together, two, we play chess. Being an obligatory creature I had no objections to Damons clauses. Then he smiled. Thats what Damon Tommolino is like: a morsel of truth encased in an even finer casing of truth, which is always humor, the heart of the Universe. There was an even more exacting truth all of this that I was aware of. If I stood to produce any coherent work myself I would need to seek out the visionary eye of somebody who I trusted. Thats where Abi Prince came in. Abi is a Panman Production colleague, but more importantly a visionary filmmaker and editor that I knew could handle the surreal nature of this encounter. Regardless we were not about to take any chances so Damon made sure to keep filling Abis glass with fine African Shiraz. What was recorded that evening was the delicate, unadulterated, result(s) of the incident of three artists coming together to make sense of the world around them through each others eyes. – Marlo L. Brown, film maker
