Roger Smith Hotel, Lily’s. 6/24/10. 10:30 AM.

”We are all a bit unusual here at the Roger Smith”

It’s breakfast, and me and Mr John Knowles, one of the masterminds behind Panman Productions are sitting down in Lily’s enjoying a very solid plate of Lily’s omelet and toast. I look at John as he picks up a piece of bread and dips it on his plate, and just when he is about to reap the fruit on the edge of his fork he utters these words.

With inspiration from the soccer world cup and the excitement from the people around me, and the new fuel in my stomach, I take a few moments to reflect of Johns words and realize the weight of them. Our beloved guests come from all over the world to experience the lively (sometimes hectic) pulse of the the “big apple”. Business or pleasure, sometimes the city eats you up and spits you out. Wherever you go there will always be expectations on you of how you should act and the norms you should follow.

I came from Sweden, Rex came from Hong Kong, Daniel from Sweden, Gemma, Ana & Vicenc from Spain. We are all interns both staying and working at the RSH. We all came here knowing that there were expectations on us to act in a certain way and so on. After living “the Roger Smith life” for one year I have come to insight with the fact that I was not hand picked to be here for my “machine like” behavior, but for my ability to not act like a machine, and to surprise people in what they can expect when they step into the RSH.

There is nothing usual about the Roger Smith Hotel. Everyday brings something interesting to the table, whether it is a new arts installation, a wine tasting or perhaps just sharing a drink with a new friend on Henry’s rooftop bar. This place brings out the true colors of people and the characters that are hidden within everyone.

I am an intern at the RSH, disguised as a suited gentleman during the day, and a street dancing explorer at night. I feed on the experiences of the streets, and thrive on pulse of the city. With my skateboard under my feet it’s once again time to roll out from the RSH, curious on what I’ll bring back…

I am Tomas Terstad, and I am Roger Smith.

Daniel Kalmar: RSH foreign legionnaire

My name is Daniel Kalmar, also known as DannyGoulash on Twitter, and I’m one of six foreign management trainees working at Roger Smith Hotel, currently within Social Media! Originally from Sweden, I’ve been around and experienced a lot in my days, but nothing has affected me quite as much as my current situation.

As things have progressed, I’ve made this exclusive interview together with Adam Wallace, blabbering about myself and also a narrated slideshow of my recent family visit, more specifically my brother and sister-in-law. In these videos, I was told to just let everything out, which I tried to do as quickly is possible not to make these videos too long ;)

So here’s a little peek into my world!

I am also the newest addition to the Roger Smith Social Media team, and I’m loving it! Great department to work in, great things to do, a constant flow of tasks and most importantly, an unorthodox way of marketing! Brian Simpson gave me the coolest nickname I’ve had for long time, he branded me the “Social Media Project Killer”. Doing my best to live up to that…Well, that’s all for now, see you around, folks!
