The Roger Smith Poetry Dinner With Brian Johnstone

Brian Johnstone has been a good friend of ours, from afar until now, so we are delighted to have him with us this week at The Roger Smith Hotel, on our shores for his first time.
On Wednesday evening Sculptor/Poetry Afficionado/Roger Smith Hotel President, James Knowles, hosted a dinner party in honor of our Scottish poet friend. In The Solarium on the 16th floor, our longest dinner table was set for a culinary/auditory feast for 40 passionate and spirited poets and poetry lovers alike. We asked that all who join us, come armed with a poem to read or recite either for the camera, or the table over dinner and were all thrilled to find that our guests had embraced our terms and chosen a thoughtful, elegant, diverse selection of prose to share.
We kicked off the evening with drinks, while our Director of New Media (and excellent cameraman), John Birdsong egged people to share their poems with him and those in earshot. The recitals continued through dinner with gusto, prompted by a wonderful reading of selections of his own work by the guest of honor Brian Johnstone; followed by the New York based Scottish poet Alastair Reid. People intermittently performed their selected work, of both others and their own, all between chatting, getting to know each other, and talking poetry and art.
We had poetry from all four corner of the earth, in just as many languages, by Shakespeare, Edith Sodergran (Sweden), Pablo Neruda (Chile) and Duong Tuong (Vietnam), as well as compositions by our poet friends Elizabeth Torres, Graeme Bezanson, Megin Jiminez, Alice White and Jackie Clark.

Last Friday, friend of The Roger Smith Hotel, Catherine Eaton, hosted an Artist’s Salon. It was an exceptional evening with a thoughtfully curated group of creative minds, gathered in the Penthouse for food and wine tastings, artists’ showcases and colorful conversation.

Catherine Eaton
Catherine also performed an extract from a piece she is writing and producing, about her great grandmother’s journey from England to Paraguay and eventually on to America. Clearly her life is a truly extraordinary story, and as you hear from the audio, you can literally hear Catherine channeling her great grandmother, it was fantastic! http://www.stirproductions.net/
Jon Ehrenberg
Jon Ehrenberg’s focus is works-on-paper and video installation. On Friday Jon showed a video piece, Inspired by Gogol’s “The Nose”, the short animated film has this dream like quality, contemplative, and really touching. What started with giggles in the beginning with the loss of the nose in the bowl, soon came to an end as the story guided us gently towards a more sophisticated understanding of the work. It would be fair to say, the entire audience was spellbound for the entire 7 minutes. http://www.jonathanehrenberg.com/
Daniel Mowles and Juan Micieli-Martinez (food and wine)
Daniel Mowles, Lily’s Chef De Cuisine at The Roger Smith Hotel was the evening’s featured chef. He created an exquisite tasting menu specifically for the evening, specifically intended to be paired with the expertly selected wines from Martha Clara Vineyard, and introduced by their head winemaker, Juan Micieli-Martinez. http://www.marthaclaravineyards.com/ http://www.rslilys.com/
What we ate:
Black Truffle Celery Root Soup with Jumbo Lump Crab
Roast Golden Beets with Fresh Goats Cheese, Pomegranate Molasses and Micro Greens
Long Island Duck Breast with Braised Red Cabbage, Broccoli Rabe and Orange Essence Demi Glaze
Pistachio Dark Chocolate Gelato with Candy Pumpkin and Gold Leaf
What we drank:
Martha Clara 2009 Chardonnay
Martha Clara 2009 Sauvignon Blanc
Martha Clara 2007 Merlot
Martha Clara 2004 Brut Rose (my favorite)
Felicity Hogan
Felicity Hogan, a Brit with 15 years of New York on her side, is an arts administrator, curator, but was with us at the salon to talk about her work as an artist. She gave insight into the two week residency for New York City art workers she was invited be a part of over the Summer of 2010. As she described her artistic process and the importance of dialogue in and around her work, it was fitting that Felicity also laid out her paintings for us to see as she talked. http://www.felicityhogan.com/
Shiau-uen Ding
We also had a piano performance by Shiau-uen Ding. She is a wonderfully imaginative and physically vivacious performer, she uses more than just the keys, pedals and her fingers to make music…a real treat to watch her at work. http://shiauuending.com/
Peter Cobb
A clip of the performance by the Saxophonist, Peter Cobb. Not only was his performance simply beautiful, (taking place in The Penthouse, it could have come straight out of a movie scene) but the tale of his journey from impressionable child to Attorney in Law to Sax virtuoso, is an excellent one.http://petercobbjazz.blogspot.com/

Having Fun And Trying Lily’s New Fall Lunch Menu
Posted on 21. Oct, 2010 by BrianSimpson in Hotel, Lily's Restaurant
When you mix a crisp day in NYC, a new Fall lunch menu and two people that love take pictures of everything – the end result is this:
Adam and Brian’s “Big Words” Lunch Review at Lily’s Restaurant.
Recently our Chef, Daniel Mowles, released his teams Fall lunch menu and we were excited to try it. We each started with the ‘soup of the day’ which happened to be Clam Chowder (pronounced Chowdah). Not to creamy, nicely seasoned, small potatoes, clams in every bite and fresh, warm rustic bread to clean the bowl! As a main course Adam enjoyed the Papperdelle Pasta, served with broccoli rabe, hen of the woods mushrooms, roasted shaved garlic and fresh pecorino romano cheese. I opted for the Market Salad which boasted house-made pickled root vegetables, roasted cauliflower, forest mushrooms, sliced breakfast radish and a vegetable puree dressing.
For dessert Jesus, our server and all around great guy, suggested the Five Spice Apple Tart. The smell alone of the spices, especially the cinnamon, were enough to prompt us to order a second!
To wash it all down an espresso and a cappuccino…
Next up – the dinner menu…and wine!
Special thanks for appearing in our post and making lunch enjoyable:
