@CarmineGallo Talks About His Book “The Power of Foursquare”
Posted on 19. Oct, 2011 by admin in Community
Carmine Gallo author of “The Power of Foursquare” at The Roger Smith Hotel
We had the Power of Foursquare party the other night, which was a great success. We had a hotdog special and a beer special for those who checked in. It was great to be able to connect and talk with Carmine Gallo who wrote “The Power of Foursquare” and engage with him during his stay in the city. He is building an understanding of how people can best capitalize on the new communication tools that are changing our professional landscape. We were mentioned in the book for our relentless pursuit to be engaged and be active in the conversation. @RShotel is mentioned in the book on page 91. Thanks so much @carminegallo @adwal; http://bit.ly/qMyx35 Props!
“The Hotel that Social Media Built!”
The event was put together with the collaboration of the Social Media Club of New York, McGraw-Hill and especially Julia Baxter who was on top of everything from the start. Good to work with such good people.

In the fall of 2006, I came to the Roger Smith Hotel to work with John Knowles to start a video-based website for the hotel called Roger Smith News (now RogerSmithLife). The idea was to create a site that would tell stories through video about all areas of the hotel community. This was certainly an unconventional idea at the time and a forward-thinking investment by James Knowles, CEO (and artist-in-residence) of the Roger Smith. As opportunities on the Internet expanded, the hotel increased its commitment in the online space and I moved into the position of director of digital marketing.

With the combined efforts of many at the hotel including the creativity of John Knowles and his Panman Productions team, Brian Simpson’s passion for connecting with people, a cutting edge arts program run by Matt Semler, and a great community in the social media scene, we were able to build a colorful, dynamic and engaged online presence. The vision, leadership and unwavering support of James Knowles made all of this possible.
Encouraged by this amazing experience with a pioneering team, I have decided to move on to the next adventures. I am excited to watch the Roger Smith Hotel’s online presence continue to flourish. John Birdsong will take the lead on media, website work and online engagement. John Knowles will innovate and lead many of the marketing initiatives at the hotel. Ek Wongleecharoen, Matt Semler and Danika Druttman will also be very involved in the Roger Smith’s online communications.
As for me, I am exploring opportunities both in New York and San Francisco and am looking forward to all that is to come. Below you can find contact information for me and for all who are involved at the Roger Smith.
Thank you to everyone at the Roger Smith Hotel for this phenomenal opportunity. I am proud of what we have accomplished. I will always be a loyal RSH supporter and will always be one of the many “Roger Smiths”.
To all of our friends in the great community that has developed at the hotel, the Roger Smith’s commitment to you and to the online space is strong and continuing to grow. The team at the hotel is looking forward to seeing you all soon at events and around the hotel. (I can assure you that you will find me up at Henry’s Rooftop Bar for a drink this summer).

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Bethanne Patrick, known as the book maven, here at Lily’s Restaurant at the Roger Smith Hotel. It was great to hear from her about the ways in which social media has impacted the publishing industry and the role that she has played in this change. Below is a clip on how she got involved on Twitter and how it has impacted his work as well as a clip on what she loves about New York. You can find Bethanne on Twitter, @thebookmaven and on her website, http://bookmavenmedia.com

Twittering Through Chemo: Brian Simpson & Drew Olanoff @ SXSW Conf

When I tell people that cancer saved my life, I get the same look every time, Bewilderment. If not for cancer I am not writing this post. Those of you that have become my friends are not reading it (and you’re not my friends)
I would not have had the courage to leave my career and fight for something bigger, more important. The friends that I have made combined with the joy and love I have experienced in the last eighteen months have made me realize this is living. Its about actually getting the most out of life with no excuses. Life is filled with mistakes, heartache and pain – no matter how optimistic you are. Surviving cancer has made me (and this will be a fun over use of overused words) a guru-maven-expert-cowboy-ninja-coach-superuser-connoisseur and master sage of finding the good in everything.
Its there, we are all good people.
The video in this post is a shortened version of my talk at SXSW with my friend Drew Olanoff. Without cancer mine or his, we are not friends. I BlameDrewsCancer for creating our friendship…see, even cancer has a good side. Thank you to all that attended our talk & to all of you that have supported and encouraged me.
Special thanks to Hugh Forrest and SXSW for the amazing opportunity to share our stories and a forum to hear the stories of others.
To @DannyGoulash & @Adwal for editing the video and The Team of The Roger Smith Hotel for the time and support to do it all!

Posted on 15. Apr, 2010 by Editor in Community, Hotel
Adam Wallace of the Roger Smith Hotel met up with Andrea Jovell Swensson, PR consultant for the Swedish company “Tillväxtakademin” (translating to Academy of Growth) in Sweden. In true Roger Smith fashion, they sat down in Lily’s Restaurant for a quick bite and started chatting.
Here, Andrea sheds light on her own perspectives on what Social Media and Twitter means to the business world, how it is used in Sweden and how fast it’s growing! Check it out.
Review of the iPad by Adam Wallace

James Knowles (@barkingdognews) of the Roger Smith Hotel recently purchased the newly released iPad, which created a frenzy in the offices of RSH! Shortly after, Adam Wallace got his hands on it and ran away from the pack to play with it.
Here, Adam gives us a little introduction and review about this extraordinary machine, presenting some of its functions and apps. Check it out!

Daniel Kalmar: RSH foreign legionnaire
Posted on 22. Mar, 2010 by Editor in Community, Hotel
My name is Daniel Kalmar, also known as DannyGoulash on Twitter, and I’m one of six foreign management trainees working at Roger Smith Hotel, currently within Social Media! Originally from Sweden, I’ve been around and experienced a lot in my days, but nothing has affected me quite as much as my current situation.
As things have progressed, I’ve made this exclusive interview together with Adam Wallace, blabbering about myself and also a narrated slideshow of my recent family visit, more specifically my brother and sister-in-law. In these videos, I was told to just let everything out, which I tried to do as quickly is possible not to make these videos too long
So here’s a little peek into my world!
I am also the newest addition to the Roger Smith Social Media team, and I’m loving it! Great department to work in, great things to do, a constant flow of tasks and most importantly, an unorthodox way of marketing! Brian Simpson gave me the coolest nickname I’ve had for long time, he branded me the “Social Media Project Killer”. Doing my best to live up to that…Well, that’s all for now, see you around, folks!

Zane’s Crib in Dallas, TX
Posted on 19. Mar, 2010 by Editor in Community, Hotel
In February, Adam Wallace and Cesar Avery of the Roger Smith Hotel had the opportunity to visit Twitter friend and Roger Smith supporter, Zane Aveton (@zaneology). They got the chance to take a tour of Zane’s “building”, a 6,000 sq/ft photo lab that they gutted and turned in to a beautiful loft. What they have done to the space is quite impressive!
Honored To Be A Shorty’s Finalist
Posted on 04. Mar, 2010 by BrianSimpson in Community, Events, Hotel, Lily's Restaurant
A year ago Adam Wallace and I (Brian Simpson) and the TEAM at The Roger Smith Hotel barely knew what the Shorty Awards were and we sure in hell were not getting into the event! Note: Last year even Julia Roy was left in the cold, literally. Fast forward one year and we find ourselves one of five finalists in the category of Customer Service. Although the Shorty Awards are a Twitter based awards recognition, we at RSH know that customer service goes way beyond what can be conveyed in 140 characters. Our on-line presence has certainly been instrumental in finding new friends, converting them into guests and following up to ensure satisfaction. It is fitting that the day after the event Tamar Weinberg has a blog post that expresses this same message. Tamar quotes Joseph Jaffe as saying “Roger Smith Hotel, through their bevy of ‘humans,’ actually participates. They go out of their way to welcome any social media-initiated guests in person…”
OUR ROGER SMITH FAMILY
We were honored to be a part of The Shorty Awards and be listed in the Customer Service Category alongside:
and of course, and big congrats to, Winner ComcastBonnie
Thank you again to all that have supported us and make our jobs here at RSH more fun because we are surrounded by greatness everyday!
See you next year… with a lead image photo from behind the podium
