Roger Smith News World Report – Are Sweden
Posted on 12. Oct, 2011 by JohnKnowles in Community
Welcome to the Roger Smith News World Report travel blog. Are, Sweden!
My travels took me this past winter to the mountain ski town of Are Sweden. Being my third time back it was good to take on the mountain with @RShotel intern Oscar Wallen. The snow was fast and the conditions were great.
Roger Smith New reporting from the mountain with Oscar Wallen and the Panman himself.

I’ve got much love for the people of Are! I met great people traveling around with Nico Belloto and his crew & look forward to maintaining relationships with them in the future.
Kann dig som Hemma nar du ar I New York.
It’s a flip off. Beware of the next generation of creative talents! They are young, full of energy and they can operate with agility in new technological age. Axel Bengtson, Son of Ulrika Bengtson got his hands on a flip camera and it was game on.
I hope to make it back to Are this winter as I think it is one of the premier skiing destinations in the world. Great food, great people and truly a unique experience. If you have the chance to get there, you should go.

In the meantime I’m looking forward to tackling the mountains in VT this year. I hear that the northeast is going to get a hell of a winter. I will probably hit up Magic Mt, and support the local So. Londonderry trails! Who’s up for some ski weekends?
See you on the slopes.
Panman
I like to get feedback as always. Let me know what you think of the travel log… Is it engaging? How can I make it better? What would you like to see more of? Also if you operate a travel blog yourself, let me know about it. I would love to hear of your travels and share them with the world. Be sure to leave a link below so we can follow your adventures. Safe travels.

My $100 Art Collection. By John Knowles
Posted on 08. Sep, 2011 by JohnKnowles in Art at Roger Smith, Arts, Community, Hotel
In an effort to stimulate a collector’s mentality, we at the Roger Smith have initiated, under the motivation and guidance of James Knowles, an art collectors program.
Over coffee at Lily’s, with myself, Danika Druttman and James Knowles, we tossed around the idea of building a young collectors art program. To be honest the idea might have been in circulation for sometime (you never know where the origin of these things comes from). Whether we came up with it or it had been a rolling stone, nothing is new, just rearranged…

James Knowles as Ben Franklin #RogersRewards
Anyway, out of his wallet he pulls two crisp $100 bills and presents them to the both of us.
The objective is to build a body of work with the intent of capturing and stimulating a collector’s imagination. For a long time our efforts have been focused on the subject and perspective of the artist and their motivations. This new initiative takes into account the mind and eye of the collector, the stories and perspectives of the people who purchase works of art.
Sent into the summer months with an idea, we now revisit the concept with newly acquired works of art. After spending a couple weeks at the Vermont Studio Center, I returned to New York with two works from a fellow artist in residence, Ester Hasskamp.
As I canvassed her studio during the open studio visit, my eye was drawn to a small black piece of paper with a threaded outline of a blue moon and its rays. Without receiving a formal title from the artist, I call it “Blue Moon & Ray”.

The second work that caught my attention was a gravestone rubbing with the name Alice. This stimulated a funny memory that involves my sister Phoebe. Phoebe and I went to support the new Bier Garden that had just opened in our neighborhood. There was a live band that was playing one of those songs similar to “Sweet Caroline” where a full crowded bar participate in the chorus… This song, which neither of us had ever heard, has burned itself into my memory as a bar room classic and will always stimulate the question, “Who the fuck is Alice?”

“Who the fuck is Alice?”
As we begin to build our collectors’ portfolios we have a confidence that our decisions have the potential to appreciate in value with each contribution. The stories that motivate the purchase and relationships that we build with the artist become long-lasting.
This is just the beginning.
As we grow this collection, we embrace artists and collectors alike to participate. As the collector has his/her own identity and personality, so will the collection. I have created my own personal blog that will follow my contributions to the overall collection and will also be providing updates to Roger Smith Life as the project grows.
Not to make it too much of a competition, but I am interested to see what Danika brings to the table.
Cheerio.
Be well,
John Knowles

Driving to the Webby’s in a Ford Focus – Internet Week NY 2011 #IWNYffh
Posted on 26. Jun, 2011 by JohnKnowles in Community, Events, Hotel
What better way to get the Webby’s during Internet Week than in a Ford Focus.
On Monday, June 13, 2011 the winner of the Ford Focus QR Code competition, Georgi Georgiev was chauffeured to the Webby’s in a Ford Focus, from the Roger Smith Hotel at 47th and Lexington.

@pancity -
@ggeorgiev How did you enjoy the Webby’s and stay at the Roger Smith Hotel? #IWNYffh
@ggeorgiev
@pancity best experience of my life!
Internet Week as a conference was quite corporate. Large businesses launched their social media objectives and new campaigns.
Of course looking to get involved with what was happening, I participated in the Ford Focus QRcode hunt. Initiated by Gregory Littley and The International Office, the campaign brought together a couple of social media moguls to help spread the word about the 2011 Ford Focus. Surrounding a QRcode hunt at the Internet Week headquarters each day I would take some pictures and log my activity.

The Ford Focus Hunt will be going on through July. If you’re interested in participating visit www.fordfocushunt.com
If you are in the market for a new car you should check out the Ford Focus.
Follow Friday @jgibbard – “Bacon is good for me!” #FF
Posted on 24. Jun, 2011 by JohnKnowles in Community, Hotel, Lily's Restaurant
@RShotel #FF pick is Jeff Gibbard #Bacon

“While I was in NYC last week for the #140conf, I stayed at the Roger Smith, the “social media” hotel.
The Roger Smith did a number of things well, from leaving me a few Vitamin Waters and a personalized note in my room, to quietly upgrading me from double beds to a king.
But what really stood out? Well of course it was the free bacon Foursquare special.

Kudos Roger Smith, you’ve won me over. I used to stay at the Park Central (a very nice hotel BTW) but you, Roger Smith have won my heart with appreciation for my industry, personal care and attention and of course…
BACON.”

Here are a couple of others who enjoyed our bacon special…

Why do people love bacon so much? Me, I can’t eat it. Be sure to stop by and test out our Social Media #Bacon and give us your opinion.
Happy Friday,

Not just a Hotel… Not just a review company… A Roadmap for Social Publishing in Hospitality…
Posted on 23. Jun, 2011 by JohnKnowles in Community, Hotel, Uncategorized
I recently was part of a webinar on social publishing which I found to be very insightful. Moderated by Josiah Mackenzie of Review Pro, the webinar made interesting observations regarding publishing strategies for the hospitality industry. The sharing of information in such a way will help lead best practice in online publishing.
Social Publishing webinar 1-2 by Panman

I was honored to speak and present with Josiah on Social Publishing and explore the current trends. I appreciate the initiative to take things to the next level. Sharing in the community will help improve business. Participation is key.
After learning more about Josiah and Review Pro, I know that they are not just a review management company. The dedication to engagement of ideas and process makes them stand out amongst their competitors. Getting to know the people, makes all the difference in their social strategy. I support their engagement strategies and look forward to participating and following future conversations. If you are interested in engaging with Review Pro and Josiah Mackenzie be sure to click through to the related links.

“Our culture is one of invitation. We use our video and content strategy to fuel the marketing in our business. The methods of social media will constantly evolve, but the dedication to community remains the same: Inform, educate, and encourage others to spread the word.”
- John Knowles

Thanks to all who are engaging with our culture. Please do engage with us, as we look to share in the moments, and engage in ideas.
Cheers,

125 like attracts like!
Posted on 02. Jun, 2011 by JohnKnowles in Art at Roger Smith, Arts, Hotel
It is a beautiful day in sunny midtown.
As I stand in front of the 125 watching people passed by I am reflecting on the law of attraction.
Like attracts like!
Last week we installed a Schwinn bike in the display window on 47th St. Next thing you know in front of this window there are four beautiful motorcycles. Talk about the law of attraction.
With a beautiful new window and improve Facade, all I can see our beautiful people walking by. The universe is calling you to come and check out our space. There is a new welcoming energy on 47th St. The sun is shining! People are happy! It Is a good day! If you are indoors, be sure to step out and enjoy the weather. If you are in midtown come by and say hello. I will be here representing on the block! #halla@me! Panman
